Overview
Institutes provide participants with the extended time needed to engage with the instruction and develop deeper understanding. These multi-day events provide a combination of lecture, self-reflections, small group, and case study activities. These institutes have been approved for professional development credit. These institutes may be presented on consecutive days or on individual days (e.g., professional development days) over the course of a semester or school year. We also provide professional development on request for a variety of RtI-related topics such as functional behavior assessment, behavior intervention plans, differentiated instruction, academic interventions, and data analysis. If you have an RtI-related professional development need, we have probably provided professional development on it.

RtI Integration throughout the Tiers
Institute Instructors: Kristin Johnson & Kris Kaase
Agenda: Days 1-3
This three-day workshop is geared towards participants who have fundamental knowledge of RtI and have experience with the entire process or have attended workshops where they would have been exposed to the entire process (e.g. Principals Institute, Tier 1 and/or Tier 2, PBIS, etc.). The workshop includes some lecture but primarily involves interactive and dynamic work group activities targeting Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 for both elementary and secondary levels. This workshop is similar to Mississippi's TST training but provides more depth and breadth in Tier 3 as well as more activities for sustainability and implementation.
Tier 1 activities will offer a brief overview of best practices, data analysis, and instructional planning for the district and/or school level. The activities will include vignettes on making decisions based on school-wide data in a teaming atmosphere. In addition, the teams will develop and write an instructional plan addressing needs, goals, and progress monitoring. Teams will receive feedback on their plans.
Tier 2 activities will present another brief overview of best practices, data analysis, and planning at the group level and individual level. The activities will include vignettes on making decisions at the group level and deciding on programs that best fit the needs of the students. These activities will also be in a teaming atmosphere. The teams will be provided folders to complete these activities and receive feedback from other teams.
Tier 2 and 3 will provide an overview on best practices, goal setting, data collection, graphing, decision making, and interventions and the individual level. The team activities will include vignettes on individual students who have academic and behavioral concerns. In addition, the teams will develop and write an instructional plan addressing needs, goals, and progress monitoring. The teams will be provided materials to complete all the tasks required at the TST level.
Finally, the workshop will provide guidance on implementation and sustainability issues including but not limited to scheduling, resources, and personnel.
This institute has been approved for continuing education unit credit and SEMI credit.

PBIS throughout the Tiers
Institute Instructor: Kristin Johnson
Agenda: Days 1-3
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) represent the social, emotional, and behavioral side of a school or district implementation of Response to Intervention. This three-day institute is designed to provide participants with a thorough knowledge of the components of a fully functioning PBIS system. Throughout the training the participants will be presented with real-life examples and activities designed to help them digest the information.
This training is ideal for school teams planning to implement PBIS or working to improve their school PBIS implementation. School teams should include a school administrator, Teacher Support Team (TST) member, teachers, and behavioral support personnel (e.g., counselors, behavior specialists, school psychologists).
The first day of the training addresses the Tier 1 elements of PBIS. These Tier 1 elements are fundamental and critical to the success of any PBIS implementation. Participants will learn about selecting and implementing, appropriate universal screening of all students. Participants will also learn how to establishing school wide behavior expectations, behavior management as well as setting up systems and practices to promote appropriate prosocial behaviors and decrease inappropriate behaviors.
Day two of the training will provide participants with an opportunity to apply what was learned during day one to a practice vignette. Then participants will learn about scientific research-based interventions for Tier 2 (small group) and progress monitoring of target behaviors. Participants will also work through vignettes to apply their learning at the group and individual levels.
Day three of the training will focus on the essentials for Tier 3: Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). Participants will learn about and practice defining problem behaviors and conducting observations. Participants will learn how to use the FBA information to develop an appropriate BIP. Participants will also learn how to monitor the integrity of implementation.
This institute has been approved for continuing education unit credit and SEMI credit.
